Anonymous vs. Scientology
Ah, Scientology. The greatest non-religion religion there is.
They sure do believe some crazy stuff, right? It is pretty crazy, I'm not going to deny it. But when it comes down to it, Jesus is said to have done some pretty crazy things too. Sure, I laughed when South Park turned "This is what Scientologists actually believe" into a meme, but part of me knew that if you applied the same standard to any other religion it would either be equally funny or you'd be a hypocrite.
I mean, over here you have: Xenu, dictator of the Galactic Confederacy who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of his people to Earth in DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs.
And right over there you have: Jesus, who was born to a virgin mother, did all kinds of magic, was killed, then came back to life. Eh, okay, that's not as sexy as the sci-fi one, but you get the idea.
So I'm saying, when it comes to the actual beliefs, I don't discriminate: They're all just as nutty as the rest.
But there's an important difference with Scientology, and that's why I support the massive protests and other "stuff" that Anonymous has been doing to them. It has to do with that whole "cult" thing.
Christianity and Scientology may both teach fairy tales, but Scientology charges you hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn them. I can't think of another religion that doesn't use its own teachings when they're trying to proselytize new followers. Scientology can't do that, because it's a for-profit enterprise.
Families torn apart, people winding up dead, brainwashing, you know all the rest. To be sure, no major "real" religion is innocent on this front -- even in the modern era, Priests and children aren't a good mix. And yet Scientology still stands out as being more ruthless, more vile, and more deserving of critique.
So that's my take on it. I'm against Scientology because of their methods, not what they believe. When it comes to beliefs, I'm an equal-opportunity opponent; They're all fucking crazy.
