Yes. The bible-belt. Conjures up many an image of religious fanaticism. I actually observed something really absurd today. I was heading to the rattlesnake round-up in Sweetwater, when we passed a large Baptist ministry-van. It had pulled off to the side of the road under an overpass--and a large group of people were joined in hands with their heads down. Assuming they were praying. In the middlle of said people, were a couple of homeless people. Hmmm, instead of prayer, why not hand out some clothes-fresh water- and perhaps even a warm meal?
Reminds me of a quote I found on http://dailyatheistquote.com That goes as follows;
"Two-hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer"
So very true. Why do people insist on prayer being an effective method of "production" ? It's ludicrous to me. This event was symbolic to me in the sense that it summarized American's religious activism towards the "have nots". This sentiment could be concluded as follows; Identify and acknowledge a problem, but provide no immediate or productive means of changing the situation. Perhaps from a medical perspective (which im fond of deriving my analogies) It's like treating the symptoms of a flu rather than eliminating the cause. Hmmm religion in a nutshell.
they HAVE to believe in the power of prayer, otherwise their entire worlds come crashing down. it's a fragile, scary existence. very religious people are weak-willed, similar to addicts. they're followers. they are the opposite of "free thinkers."
